Royal Norfolk by Bike
8 Days / 7 Nights / 6 Stages
A peaceful English cycling holiday combining coast, castles and rural charm.
Flat terrain, quiet lanes and coastal paths.
Day 1: Arrival in King’s Lynn
The day before starting the first stage, take some time to relax and explore Bishop’s Lynn, a historic port town that bore this name until the reign of Henry VIII. Immerse yourself in its rich history by visiting its impressive medieval churches, among which St Margaret’s Cathedral stands out, famous for its unusual tidal clock
Day 2: King’s Lynn → Sandringham
After receiving the bicycles, we will begin our route towards Castle Rising, a historic village that is home to a ruined 12th-century castle. This site, with strong royal connections, is famous for the mystery of Queen Isabella, imprisoned here in 1330 and whose ghost is said to still wander the grounds. Afterwards, we head to Royal Sandringham: an elegant Jacobean-style country house built in the 1870s for Edward VII, which continues to be the Christmas retreat of the Royal Family.
Day 3: Sandringham → Wells-next-the-Sea
Our first stop is the elegant town of Burnham Market, nicknamed “Chelsea-on-Sea” for its galleries, cafés and chic restaurants. This coastal area is famous for being where Admiral Lord Nelson learned to sail.
We continue towards the Holkham Estate and its magnificent park, which includes obelisks and centuries-old oak trees. We will cycle through the park to Holkham Bay on the coast.
Finally, we will enjoy a beautiful ride through the Glaven River valley to the elegant Georgian town of Holt, full of galleries, independent shops and excellent dining options.
Day 4: Coastal ride to Cromer
On this day you can choose between two alternative routes (27 km / 38 km).
Take a steam train to the elegant small Victorian town of Sheringham, the ideal place to enjoy seafood and delicious English fish and chips. Return by bike to Holt through the beautiful wooded parks of Sheringham (27 km).
Day 5: Cromer → Norwich
On this day you can choose between two alternative routes (32 km / 59 km).
Cycle to Blickling Hall to visit its red-brick Jacobean mansion, which was the home of Anne Boleyn, before continuing to Fakenham (32 km).
Then follow the route west along quiet rural roads to Little Walsingham, a historic pilgrimage centre. Second only to Canterbury in the Middle Ages, this place has a very special atmosphere that can be felt in the abbey gardens, the Slipper Chapel and the shrine (59 km).
Day 6: Norwich → countryside loop
Our route takes us to Castle Acre, a medieval gem nestled between the ruins of its 12th-century castle and one of the largest and best-preserved monastic complexes in England, founded in 1090.
After exploring this historic legacy, we will cycle north passing through Great Massingham. Here you will admire its impressive village green and its ancient ponds (known as “fish ponds”), remains dating back to the time of an 11th-century Augustinian abbey.
Day 7: Return to King’s Lynn
On your final stage, the destination is Houghton Hall, an imposing Palladian mansion built by the British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. You will explore its award-winning walled gardens and stroll through the sculpture park, known for frequently displaying works by internationally renowned artists. A majestic conclusion to your journey.
