Details of the Portuguese path bike trip

The idea of either of these two cycling tour alternatives is to pedal at your own pace through beautiful rural areas, rivers and small mountains of northern Portugal. Taste the Port wine, ride along the banks of the Douro or stroll through the Ribeira, are some of the activities and special moments that you can live throughout this experience. Discover the history of small villages and learn about the legends of the Portuguese Way. Combine the cycling trip along the Portuguese Way of St. James with the local gastronomy, wines and charming accommodations.

Central option: 8 days, 7 nights, 6 stages

Day 1: Arrival at Porto

Today, you will arrive in this beautiful and romantic Portuguese city to embark on this cycling adventure along the central Portuguese road.

Porto is a charming city that is part of the World Heritage, we encourage you to make the most of your stay and explore its streets in search of the best places and memories for posterity.

We are sure you will fall in love with the warm atmosphere of the city and especially the walks along the banks of the Douro.

We welcome you and hope everything goes smoothly.

Day 2: Porto – Arcos 37km

Today, after breakfast, you will leave behind the charms of Porto to begin the first stage of the itinerary. You will begin to move away from the urban centers to enter a much more rural landscape, to cycle gently surrounded by the traditional crops of the surroundings. At the end of the stage, you will reach Arcos, a very quiet village where you will rest and regain strength for the next day.

Day 3: Arcos – Balugaes 40km

This third stage will be full of special and significant moments.

We will start with a gentle ride to the beautiful village of Barcelos, in the district of Braga. This municipality is known for its busy market and for the legend of the rooster. This animal is endowed with great significance for the country, as it is the national symbol. It is said that it owes its origins to the legend and that even today you can still appreciate that medieval and festive atmosphere in the town.

Later, continue to Balugães, surrounded by pastures and green areas that will brighten your views until you reach the best views of the stage, beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding hills.

Day 4: Balugaes – Pecene 41 km

Day 5: Pecene – Redondela 45 km

Today is a day full of surprises, we will start the morning descending towards the Miño river, where the Fortaleza de Valença is located. Get your camera ready for today’s stage!

Later, you will cross the bridge to get to Tuy, where you will find one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Galicia, which is definitely not to be missed.

Finally, get back on your bike to finish the day in Redondela and rest for tomorrow.

Day 6: Redondela – Caldas de Reis 41 km

After breakfast, you will embark on today’s route to enjoy the beautiful scenery and fresh air along the estuary. Later, you will reach Pontevedra, a beautiful city with an old town that deserves at least a visit. We recommend you to visit the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin and visit a local restaurant for lunch. Nothing better than a good meal after a morning of pedaling, don’t you think?

Later, continue along the marked itinerary to descend through the vineyards until you reach your goal today, Caldas de Reis, where you will rest in a cozy accommodation.

Day 7: Caldas de Reis – Santiago de Compostela 42 km

Today is a very special day, as we will finally reach our destination, so don’t miss a beat and get going.

We will start in a very important medieval town on a literary level, as it was the birthplace of writers such as Camilo José Cela or Rosalía de Castro. In addition, there you will find one of the oldest churches in Galicia and an exquisite gastronomy. If you have some time, we recommend a visit to the Camilo José Cela Foundation, you will surely love it and enjoy seeing all kinds of artistic and cultural heritage.

Later, continue to visit Iria Flavia and other charming towns before reaching the final point of this cycling adventure, in Santiago de Compostela. The finishing touch to the trip you have been waiting for.

Day 8: End of the trip

Coast option: 9 days, 8 nights, 7 stages

Day 1: Arrival at Porto

Today, you will arrive in this beautiful and romantic Portuguese city to embark on this cycling adventure along the central Portuguese road.

Day 2: Porto – Povoa de Varzim 39km/ 3-5H

The first stage will take you to Matosinhos and its curious Ponte Móvel along the coastline. Cycling along the beautiful Portuguese coastline, you will reach Póvoa de Varzim where you will rest after a nice first stage.

Day 3: Povoa de Varzim – Viana do Castelo 46km / 4-5H

After a good breakfast, you will leave Póvoa de Varzim by sea roads. This stage stands out for its rural landscapes, crop fields and greenhouses. In addition, you will cycle along small cobblestone roads, handmade and stone by stone that will take you to the beautiful town of Viana do Castelo.

Day 4: Viana do Castelo – A Guarda 34km / 4-5H

In Viana do Castelo you cannot miss a visit to its fortress: O Forte de Santiago da Barra. Once you start pedaling, you will cross Vila Praia de Âncora, with its giant beach presided by its huge beach before arriving in Caminha, the last Portuguese village. You will arrive at the border, on the river Minho. You will enter the Spanish state by crossing the Miño river by ferry*. Today you will rest in A Guarda, a beautiful town full of seafood restaurants.

*The ferry has a fixed schedule and does not operate on Mondays. You can also find several taxi-boats that will take you to the other side of the river for a small fee.

Day 5: A Guarda – Vigo 63km / 6-8H

After a good breakfast, and continuing along the coast, you will cycle along a comfortable bike path through the famous Rias Baixas. You will reach Oia, a small coastal town with a Royal Monastery of Santa Maria that deserves a stop. You will also visit Baiona, before arriving in the city of Vigo.

Day 6: Vigo – Pontevedra 34km / 4-5H

Today you will continue along the Portuguese Way of St. James through the Senda del Agua, which joins the Portuguese Way as it leaves Vigo. You will leave behind the estuary and Ponte de Rande, to reach the city of Pontevedra.

Day 7: Pontevedra – Padrón 41km / 4-5H

The trip is coming to an end, but before, you will continue to know Galician land. This time you will pass through Caldas de Reis and Padrón, a town of renowned gastronomic prestige for its Herbón peppers.

Day 8: Padrón – Santiago de Compostela 26km / 3-4H

Today is a very special day, as we will finally reach our destination, so don’t miss a beat and get going.

Today is the big day. Through forests and meadows you will reach the end of the Portuguese Way by bike – congratulations!

Usual accommodations
The accommodations for this trip have been selected for their quality and location, as close as possible to the route. Always valuing the comfort when arriving with the bike and inspected by our team. They are 3-4 star hotels and rural tourism accommodations, always in private rooms with bathroom and good food!

I am only one person, can I still book?

Yes, you can book as a single traveler.

Is it possible to rent a bike?

Yes, this trip can be done with either your bike or ours. You can choose it during the booking process, hybrid or electric mountain bikes are available.

Is the daily luggage transfer between accommodations included?

Yes, every day we will take your luggage to the next hotel. You only have to leave it at the reception desk, and we will take care of everything. Normally it will already be at the hotel when you arrive.

Is it possible to cancel?

We want to be as flexible as possible. Therefore, in case of unforeseen circumstances, we will do our best to change the dates of the trip free of charge so that you can travel within the same year, as long as you let us know at least 3 weeks in advance.

And if your plans change and you want to cancel the trip before the start date, the following handling fees will apply:

– with more than 30 days, the management fees will be 20% of the amount of the trip.

– between 30 and 15 days, the handling fee will be 50% of the amount of the trip.

– with less than 14 days, the amount to be paid will be 100% of the amount of the trip.

In order to have more flexibility, we recommend taking out travel, assistance, CR and cancellation insurance. Check with us the conditions. Please note that the price of the insurance is not refunded once contracted in case of cancellation or modification.

Are there roads?

Practically the entire trip is on Vias Verdes, tracks or asphalt roads. If you make the stage to Valencia, there are a few kilometers of link that are made by road where you should drive with caution.
