Kattegat Route by Bike Helsingborg to Gothenburg
8 days / 7 nights / 6 stages – Easy – Coastal route
One of Scandinavia’s most beautiful coastal cycle routes.
Traffic-free cycle paths with sea views throughout.
Day 1: Arrival in Helsingborg
A relaxing day to enjoy the city of Helsingborg before your first stage.
Day 2: Helsingborg → Höganäs
This section of the Kattegattleden offers a privileged balcony to the sea, with constant views of the Öresund Strait and the silhouette of Denmark on the horizon. Your adventure begins in Helsingborg, passing the majestic Sofiero Castle, whose garden has been awarded the title of the most beautiful in Europe.
The route then leads to Höganäs, a paradise for food lovers and local products. From here, the path becomes wilder as you enter the Kullahalvön Peninsula, culminating in the spectacular Kullaberg Nature Reserve. Finally, you cycle to the historic town of Ängelholm, with 500 years of history, marking the end of a 62 km stage (or 46 km if you prefer the scenic shortcut to Jonstorp).
Day 3: Höganäs → Båstad
From Ängelholm, the route leaves the sea behind to explore the heart of the Bjäre Peninsula. After a challenging climb through prehistoric agricultural and pastoral landscapes, enjoy an exciting descent to Båstad, the lively capital of leisure and tennis. After exploring its vibrant streets, you can conveniently take the train to Halmstad to finish your stage.
Day 4: Båstad → Halmstad
From Halmstad, you cycle west to discover the iconic beaches of Tylösand, Frösakull, and Vilshärad. After enjoying the coastline, you connect with the historic coastal road (Kustvägen), passing through nature reserves with unique meadows. As you pass the picturesque village of Steninge, the landscape changes: from a wild, rugged environment to lush farmland that continues all the way to Falkenberg.
Day 5: Halmstad → Varberg
From Falkenberg, one of Halland’s oldest medieval gems, you head to vibrant Varberg. Along the way, cross Apelviken Beach, the European epicenter of windsurfing. Upon arrival, the imposing Varberg Fortress dominates the horizon; you can challenge yourself to cycle up to its walls or relax in the shade of Societetsparken. A perfect stage finish combining history and sea breeze.
Day 6: Varberg → Kungsbacka
Leaving Varberg, the landscape transforms into rocky cliffs and untouched islands like Getterön and Vendelsö. After cycling along the ocean to Åsa Beach, we recommend a detour to visit Tjolöholm Castle, the only Tudor-style castle in Sweden. The stage finishes in Kungsbacka, a major commercial and cultural center. For a more relaxed day, you can shorten the route to 50 km by taking the train from Åsa.
Day 7: Kungsbacka → Gothenburg
The final stretch runs along the Kungsbacka fjord back toward the ocean. You pass the small coastal village of Särö, where Gothenburg’s royalty and high society gathered for leisure in the early 20th century. The trail continues along cliffs, lush forests, bays, and small ports, offering many places to swim or simply relax. As you approach central Gothenburg, you pass Nya Varvet and the Klippan cultural reserve, continuing along the Göta älv River until reaching your final destination: the Gothenburg Opera House and the Lilla Bommen harbor. Welcome to Gothenburg!
