Details of the País Vasco and Navarra Greenways with Eurovelo 1trip
With this bike trip you will pedal through two of the most beautiful greenways in terms of landscape and environment. It is a combination of different cycling routes that pass through the Basque Country and Navarra. Specifically, the bicycle trip through the Greenways of the Basque Country and Navarre, begins in Vitoria, pedaling gently along the Greenway of the Vasconavarro Railway to Estella. Here the bicycle trip links up with the Eurovelo 1 route, and after passing Pamplona, you pedal gently downhill to San Sebastian along the Plazaola Greenway.
This is a magnificent cycling proposal that crosses three provinces and passes through three important capitals of the Basque Country and Navarre. Practically the entire trip runs along Vías Verdes, paths or bike paths away from the roads. So it is a good option to cycle slowly in the middle of nature from the Llanada Alavesa to the sea.
There are 5 stages, 6 nights and 7 days starting in Vitoria and arriving in San Sebastian.
This trip combines in part the cycling trips along the Vasconavarro and Plazaola Green Ways, which can be done independently.
Day 1: Arrival at the first hotel the night before the first stage, arrival at Vitoria – Gasteiz.
Relaxing day to visit the capital of the Basque Country the day before starting to cycle. Here you will receive your bikes if you have rented them. Today is a day to relax and get ready for a beautiful cycling trip.
Day 2: Vitoria – Gasteiz – Maestu. 31 km and 460 m elevation gain
We will start pedaling gently along the VasconavarroGreenway away from Vitoria. It is worth a quick stop at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz, a jewel of Romanesque art of the eleventh century.
Then we go deeper and deeper into the typical forests of the area along with small villages. This first section is conditioned by the Laminoria tunnel (2,195 m.), which is currently impassable and closed. But, to avoid it, it can be done by a short detour by road without traffic or through a mountain track that probably has to be done on foot because of the slopes during the ascent and descent. This section of track is the only section that presents a certain difficulty. However, it is a beautiful stretch in the middle of the native forest in the Alavesa Mountains. Once we leave the mountain track, we will descend the Guereñu pass until we return to the original route of the Vía Verde, where after a few kilometers and after passing through a sound tunnel, we will arrive at Maestu.
Day 3: Maestu – Estella. 45 km and 60 m elevation gain
After breakfast, and shortly after starting to pedal, we will leave Alava to enter Navarra. Where we will arrive at the end of the Vasconavarro Railway Greenwayin Estella, located in the old Estella Railway Station, today a bus station.
You will leave behind the Vía Verde del Vasco Navarro and after a good breakfast the bike trip will go along the Eurovelo 1 following the French Way of St. James in the opposite direction. The landscape changes completely, and after a beautiful stage we will arrive in Pamplona. It is worthwhile to visit the historic center of the city.
Day 5: Pamplona – Lekunberri 40 km and 450 m of elevation gain
We will start pedaling towards the exit of the capital of Navarra. Under the watchful eye of Mount San Cristobal, we will approach the beginning of the Plazaola Greenway. We will ride the first kilometers of the route, ascending gently until we reach the old train station of Lekunberri.
Day 6: Lekunberri – San Sebastián 65 km and 170 m of elevation gain
The last stage is fascinating. As soon as we start pedaling, leaving behind the old station, we will suddenly enter a beautiful landscape. Green slopes, forests and valleys accompany us to the end of the Greenway. In its more than 40 tunnels we have to take shelter, and we will have to put our foot down in the mandatory detours to save the closed tunnels, but it will be worth it.
When we reach Andoain, we will cycle along rural roads and bike paths to the capital of Guipuzcoa. Here, next to the beaches of San Sebastian, we will see the sea.
Day 7: End of the trip. After breakfast, the trip will be over.
