Details of the Murcia to Granada by bike through the Quaternary Geopark of Granada bike trip
Spectacular trip from Murcia to Granada by bike between roads, trails and Greenways that will not cease to amaze you. This is a route with a high cultural and historical value as you will cross the medieval border from the Christian Kingdom of Murcia to the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
Starting in Murcia you will pedal through archaeological sites, fortresses of the Nasrid Kingdom and ruins. Passing through a singular and unique landscape with a great almost desert-like plain surrounded by impressive mountain ranges to others that contrast and surprise us with a forest forest and abundant water, where you can take a break and take a bath in one of its reservoirs, such as El Negratín. Finally, there will be an ascent to the Puerto de Los Blancares from where to contemplate Sierra Nevada and to culminate at the gates of the Alhambra.
Day 1: Arrival at Murcia
Today will be a day to rest and visit Murcia, before starting to cycle. For the more adventurous can make the route to the Sanctuary of Fuensanta.
Day 2: Lorca – Velez Blanco 48km
We will go to Lorca and before we start pedaling we will visit the historic center and the Fortress of the Sun, to put us in context about the history of the medieval territory. We will continue towards Velez Blanco through a beautiful landscape between mountains and along the Guadalentin river. Arriving at the ruins of the fortress of Xiquena (which was on the border between the side of the Nasrid kingdom and the Christian). We will finish with a climb to Velez Blanco, a village with impressive baroque architecture.
Day 3: Velez Blanco – Galera 44km
In this second stage highlights the Altiplano de Granada, the area formed by a dense pine forest and then the fields of Orce. Here we recommend you to visit the Museum of the First Settlers, where you will find archaeological sites of the oldest in Europe worthy of admiration. Continuing towards Galera you can take a break in the warm waters of Fuencaliente.
Once in Galera, do not miss the site of Castellón Alto (Argaric culture), the Museum of Galera (archaeological remains) and of course the necropolis of Tutugi to learn about the Iberian culture.
Day 4: Galera – Baza 50km
Today, we will enter fully into the Geopark of Granada. We will be accompanied by impressive badlands along the valley. Then we will pass through villages that go into an area of abundant water and that gives rise to large reservoirs such as the Negratín. Climbing the hill of Jabalcón, we will find a scenic landmark of the Hoya de Baza.
Baza was occupied by the Muslims who marked the structure of its old town with Alcazaba, Arab baths, narrow streets…
Day 5: Baza – Guadix 62-84km
It will be the longest stage but you will enjoy the magnificent route that awaits us. We will continue in the middle of the Geopark of Granada, in this case you will pedal along the Vía Verde de la Sierra de Baza to the Cañón de Baúl. Towards Gorafe you can stop at the Puntal viewpoint with incredible panoramic views; Dolmens, Gor river canyon, the hot springs of Alcun, the travertine ditch, among others. Finally we will go up the Fardes river to Guadix, with a very nice old town.
Day 6: Guadix – Granada 57km
To finish the route, you will climb up to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, towards Granada. You will contemplate the abrupt badlands of Marchal and Baños. It is mandatory to stop at the Mirador del Fin del Mundo with a unique panoramic view where you can enjoy the reddish canyon of the badlands, the green valley of the Alhama River, with olive, almond and fruit trees, and the white summit of Sierra Nevada. Finally you will climb the Puerto de Los Blancares, one of the classics in the great cycling events, and then descend to the valley of the Genil River and finish the stage in Granada.
Day 7: Back to Murcia and end of the trip
We will return to Murcia after breakfast and end the experience.

During the 7 stages you will pedal through a quiet and beautiful landscape discovering the first settlers of Europe, with its incredible archaeological finds, remains of ruins and fortresses and knowing the history of Al-Andalus, which will not leave you indifferent.
You will pass through a great almost desert-like plain surrounded by incredible mountain ranges and deep badlands. But you will also pass through a beautiful forest landscape with abundant water, where you can take a dip and rest in the Negratín Reservoir.
Finally, you will climb the Puerto de Los Blancares with a great view of the Sierra Nevada to later arrive in Granada and put the finishing touch with a visit to the Alhambra.

They are 3-4 star hotels and rural tourism accommodation, always in private rooms with bathroom and good food!
I am only one person, can I still book?
Yes, you can book as a single traveler.
Is it possible to rent a bike?
Yes, this trip can be done with either your bike or ours. You can choose it during the booking process, hybrid or electric mountain bikes are available.
Is the daily luggage transfer between accommodations included?
Yes, every day we will take your luggage to the next hotel. You only have to leave it at the reception desk, and we will take care of everything. Normally it will already be at the hotel when you arrive.
Is it possible to cancel?
We want to be as flexible as possible. Therefore, in case of unforeseen circumstances, we will do our best to change the dates of the trip free of charge so that you can travel within the same year, as long as you let us know at least 3 weeks in advance.
And if your plans change and you want to cancel the trip before the start date, the following handling fees will apply:
– with more than 30 days, the management fees will be 20% of the amount of the trip.
– between 30 and 15 days, the handling fee will be 50% of the amount of the trip.
– with less than 14 days, the amount to be paid will be 100% of the amount of the trip.
In order to have more flexibility, we recommend taking out travel, assistance, CR and cancellation insurance. Check with us the conditions. Please note that the price of the insurance is not refunded once contracted in case of cancellation or modification.
Are there roads?
Practically the entire trip is on Vias Verdes, tracks or asphalt roads. If you make the stage to Valencia, there are a few kilometers of link that are made by road where you should drive with caution.
