This self-guided cycling holiday in the French Basque Country will allow you to discover the charm and friendly atmosphere of the South of France.

We invite you to immerse yourself in its beaches and enjoy the marvellous views of the Basque coast as you cycle along the Velodyssee. Passing through Biarritz, a destination for surf lovers who come year after year to enjoy their holidays. But it is inland where you will find unique mountain landscapes just across the border with Spain.

It is a good proposal to relax and taste a wide variety of local products and learn more about the Basque culture.

There are two travel proposals for cycling in the French Basque Country:

8 days, 7 nights and 6 stages.

4 days, 3 nights and 3 stages.

Option 8 days, 7 nights and 6 stages

Day 1: Arrival to Cambo les Bains

Depending on the time of arrival, you can take advantage of the day to get to know the city better. This city is a great tourist and cultural attraction. Take the opportunity to take a stroll and recharge your batteries for the cycling route.

Day 2: Cambo les Bains-Saint Jean Pied de Port 40km

The first stage will undoubtedly be the most difficult in terms of climbing, but you will hardly notice it surrounded by the wonderful panoramic views of the Pyrenees, and its vast expanses where the cows and sheep of the nearby farms graze.

The arrival in Saint Jean Pied de Port is well worth the effort. This magical village is just a few kilometres from the Spanish border and is definitely a place not to be missed. Its streets will turn your holiday into a fairy tale and depending on the day of the week, you can visit its large street market.

Day 3: Saint Jean Pied de Port stroll 7 or 15km

Today will give you two different options so that you can choose between a rest day to discover the village or a walk along the Pilgrims’ paths to Santiago de Compostela to discover the valley.

The walk through the valley does not require great skill, it is suitable for everyone. You will discover incredible views of the vineyards and the Pyrenees.

Which would you like to choose?

Day 4: Saint Jean Pied de Port-Itxassou 40km

After breakfast, take your bike and start climbing gently up the country roads around the valley that surrounds Saint Jean Pied de Port.

During today’s stage you will have the opportunity to watch a game of Basque pelota on the pelota court, as the villages you will cross have a great tradition and history of this sport that they share with the Basque villages of northern Spain.

You will finally reach Itxassou, where you will rest in a quiet accommodation.

Day 5: Itxassou-Sare 25km

You will visit the charming village of Espelette where dried peppers are hung in front of the facades. After crossing the Pinodieta pass, you will reach Ainhoa, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France.

From there, you will be very close to the Spanish border, so we recommend you cross the customs and cycle through the north of Spain, towards the enchanted village of Zugarramurdi, known for its caves, which were the setting for the film “The Witches of Zugarramurdi”.

Finally, you will reach the traditional village of Sare, where you will rest for the next day’s stage.

Day 6: Sare-Biarritz 32km

You will leave Sare and cross the Saint Ignace pass.

On the way, take the La Rhuene rack railway, an old train that will take you in just 35 minutes to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees and the coastline, both Spanish and French, perfect backgrounds for wonderful photos!

Later, continue by bike to Saint Jean de Luz, a pretty fishing village with colourful houses near the harbour, where you can enjoy an ice-cream to recharge your batteries before continuing.

Finally, return to Biarritz, where you can enjoy a wonderful dinner in one of the most recommended restaurants.

Day 7: Biarritz-Cambo les Bains 36km

On the last stage, you will say goodbye to Biarritz and continue along the coast towards Bayonne. It’s worth taking a break to admire the beautiful colourful houses, enter the cathedral and feel the atmosphere of the historic town.

After the visit, continue cycling along the country roads to reach your goal today, Cambo les Bains. Known for its thermal baths and for being a “spa town”, we recommend you to pay it a visit if you have some time.
